How to Pulling Off Pink Makeup

Spring tones are always the favorite color in makeup. Pink makes you youthful, personality and lovely. But if not combined properly,  your favorite pink can becom disasters.

How do you wear the hue while still remaining fresh-faced and sophisticated? “When pink tones are overdone and used on the eyes, cheeks and lips simultaneously, it’s easy to look like you broke into your mom’s makeup case,” says Mark Anastasios, artistry trainer for Anastasia Beverly Hills. “Typically, neon pinks tend to look juvenile because they are paired with too much other makeup. Pinks can look sophisticated when they are in softer, romantic hues and are the focus of fresh makeup.”

To master the look so that it’s pretty, sophisticated and totally on point, it’s all about going with pretty shades of the color—think rose golds, baby pinks and even stains in variations of the color pink—and accenting it with lots of earth tones, bronzes, browns and golds so the makeup doesn’t look so contrived. “Pink is a very easy color to wear both day and night,” says makeup artist Paola Orlando.

For your eyes, it’s best to wear a wash of pink color, otherwise your upper eyelids could look sunburned—Anastasios says to steer clear of red-based pink shadows. “I like to use a very soft, light, creamy pink eye shadow for a pretty daytime look and accent it with just mascara,” says Orlando. Try MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Color Stick in Lilacked ($22) or Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Ballet Pink ($26).

When it comes to your cheeks, it’s all about picking that just right shade of pink—go too light and the color won’t show on up on your skin; go to dark and you’ll look like a cartoon character or a clown. You’re best with a color that complements your natural skin tone. Orlando says to, “Stick with multicolored powders that are punctuated with vibrant pink and deep bronze to give a desert-rose glow with some highlight and contouring benefits, too.” Our picks: Benefit Cosmetics Cheekathon Blush & Bronzer Palette ($58) and Soap & Glory Love at First Blush ($15).

The lips are a little different, and this is one area of the face where going light or dark really makes no difference as long as it works with your skin tone. “Bright pinks in matte finishes, like Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks in Rio and Party Pink ($20 each), are big right now. So are glossy nude pinks—they are always fresh and classic and can go from day to night,” says Anastasios. Nars Summer 2016 Lip Cover in Get Dirty ($28) and Smith + Cult The Shining Lip Lacquer in Flesh Riot ($22) are great ones to try.
